Dr. Liang Cheng, Professor of Pathology and Surgery/Urology, chaired the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) Multidisciplinary Consensus Conference on Cancer Precursor Lesions of the Genitourinary Organs, held after the annual European Congress of Pathology (ECP) on September 12, 2024. The meeting was extremely well attended, with over 140 registered participants from around the world.
The main objectives of the meeting included:
- Defining established and putative precursor lesions of the genitourinary organs.
- Refining classification schemes, terminology, and diagnostic criteria.
- Providing recommendations for pathology reporting.
- Offering guidance on ancillary studies and diagnostic work-up.
- Conducting a literature review to aid in developing guidelines for clinical management.
Five working groups, led by world-renowned experts, focused their discussions on cancer precursor lesions from each genitourinary site: Prostate, Bladder, Kidney, Testis, and Penis. Their findings are expected to be published in 2025.
Dr. Liang Cheng is currently the President-Elect of the ISUP and will assume the presidency following next year’s USCAP meeting in Boston in March 22-27, 2025.
