Dr. Kamaljeet Singh has joined the department as Associate Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine of Brown University and Director of Breast Pathology and Associate Director of the Clinical Hematology Lab under the direction of Dr. James Sung, Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital.

Jake Kurtis received a 2018 OVPR research seed award to identify novel drugs for the treatment of falciparum malaria in children.

The study, conducted in 647 mother-infant pairs examined the role of maternal antibodies in protecting infants from malaria infection and disease.

C. James Sung, MD, Professor of Pathology, was awarded $20,000 by the Luke Charitable Foundation of Rhode Island in December 2018 in support of the International Visiting Fellowship in Gynecologic Pathology, Breast Pathology and Perinatal Pathology.

Joyce Ou, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology, was awarded $75,000 by Swim Across America in December 2018 in support of her research entitled “Genomic signatures of tumor evolution: a search for novel markers of endometrial cancer”.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that, following a national search, Wafik El-Deiry, MD, PhD, FACP will join the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Lifespan hospitals, and the Division of Hematology/Oncology within the Department of Medicine and the Lifespan Cancer Institute, in January.

A new $9.4 million federal grant to Lifespan will create a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) that will help researchers from The Miriam and Rhode Island hospitals discover ways to help address the worldwide threat of drug-resistant "superbugs."
